Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is taking his security concerns to court. On Saturday, November 7, he announced that the state will approach the Supreme Court and the Gauhati High Court regarding threats of a protest at his home. A group led by MLA Akhil Gogoi plans to surround the Chief Minister's residence if two primary suspects in the Zubeen Garg death case receive bail.
Sarma views this intimidation as a major security risk. It threatens his family and his own safety. The Supreme Court expects to hear bail pleas for suspects Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sharma on November 30. Sarma ordered the state legal department to alert the judiciary, insisting that legal proceedings remain free from external pressure.
The death of singer Zubeen Garg on September 19, 2025, remains a point of intense public interest. He died while swimming in Singapore during the North East India Festival, an incident Singapore police ruled as lacking foul play. Despite this, local groups demand further accountability.
The Chief Minister pointed to previous court rulings to illustrate how the law works. The Gauhati High Court granted bail to Amritprava Mahanta on October 9 after noting that 160 witnesses failed to name her in court, despite initial mentions in the Special Investigation Team report. Sandipan Garg also received bail. Sarma defended the judicial process against the recent threats. "People should question the witnesses, not me. The court should be allowed to do its work," he said.
