Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lashed out at media outlets over their reporting on the Zubeen Garg death investigation. He flagged concerns about claims that suspects would easily secure bail. The Supreme Court delayed bail-related hearings until November 30. These proceedings involve the applications of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddhartha Sharma. The court will also review the Assam government’s challenge to bail granted to Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipan Garg.
Justice Pranjal Das of the Gauhati High Court previously ordered bail for Amritprabha Mahanta. Special Investigation Team chief Munna Prasad Gupta announced the state’s intent to challenge these bail orders on October 18. Sandipan Garg, a suspended Assam Police DSP and cousin of the late singer, remains a key figure in the case. Shyamkanu Mahanta, organizer of the Northeast India Festival, is also facing charges.
Sarma demanded more scrutiny of witness statements. He noted a gap between what people say on television and what they tell the court. Many witnesses still need to testify. The Chief Minister warned against outside influence. "Media should question the witnesses" he said, insisting they must depose without any pressure. Investigations continue in a fast-track court. Records show 134 witnesses provided testimony by mid-October.
Zubeen Garg died on September 19, 2025, in Singapore. He passed away while swimming in the sea during a trip for the Northeast India Festival. His death sparked massive public outrage across Assam, prompting the state to form an SIT to handle the inquiry. Officials now wait for the Supreme Court to move the legal process forward.
