Guwahati: Amritprabha Mahanta appeared before a fast-track court on Wednesday morning, October 14. This appearance followed her release from Haflong sub-jail on Tuesday, October 13. She is one of seven people accused in the death of music icon Zubeen Garg. The Gauhati High Court granted her bail on October 9 after Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar presented arguments over several days. Justice Pranjal Das set bail at a bond of Rs 50,000 with two sureties of the same amount.
Mahanta spent nearly a year in custody. She was previously held alongside former bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami. Other suspects remain in Tamulpur jail. Mahanta is the first accused in the death case to secure bail. While two security officers previously obtained bail, those proceedings involved separate financial charges.
Dr. Palmee Borthakur, the sister of Zubeen Garg, sparked controversy after witnessing Mahanta's departure from jail. She used social media to highlight the large amount of luggage loaded into a vehicle at the facility. Borthakur questioned the nature of the confinement after seeing the volume of personal property. She wrote, "I could not understand whether it was a jail or a high-end hotel."
Borthakur further alleged the vehicle driver acted aggressively toward witnesses. She stated the driver warned onlookers to keep their distance, suggesting the accused was receiving special status. The family is now calling for a formal examination of the facilities at the jails involved. Tension flared further at the court entrance on Wednesday. Lawyer Anand Kumar Bhuyan allegedly threatened journalists covering the arrival. The legal proceedings remain ongoing.
