Guwahati: Rahul Gautam Sharma turned down a request to mediate between various groups fighting for justice for the late singer Zubeen Garg. He sent a letter on October 31 to Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, responding to a proposal dated October 26. The move follows a resolution made by the Zubeen Garg Nyay Dabi Samiti during an October 25 public event at Zubeen Khetra.

Sharma claims the family already took charge. They submitted a memorandum to the Governor asking for direct intervention. Sharma also confirmed he appeared in a fast-track court on October 30 to testify, though officials have not yet recorded his statement.

The singer’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, wants a peaceful fight. Sharma echoed her stance on keeping the campaign dignified and free from political squabbles. He spoke with several intellectuals and political leaders who urged the family to stay focused on the legal process. Sharma said, "Justice for Zubeen Garg was not merely a demand of his family but an expectation and moral responsibility shared by the people of Assam."

He refused to act as a mediator for now. He believes social movements should grow from the grassroots, leaving the burden on social leaders and the public. Sharma warned everyone to watch their words during this sensitive time. He fears comments might hurt the ongoing court case or isolate the family from the broader movement.

The Assam government labeled the death a murder and the Home Department has filed a chargesheet. Sharma expects the authorities to own the outcome. He wants leaders to keep the pressure on the state to hold everyone accountable for the singer's death.
