Guwahati: The Union government designated Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati as an official export point for agarwood chips and oil. This decision aims to sharpen the edge of Assam's agarwood trade. Export routes are now open. The move follows a formal request from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
Goyal confirmed the approval, framing the move as a major logistical shift for both Assam and the Northeast. By cutting red tape, the government hopes to drop the distance between local producers and international buyers. It simplifies the supply chain for thousands of farmers and exporters who depend on this high-demand crop.
Assam remains a primary producer of agarwood. Sarma noted that the new status will give relief to lakhs of people who work in the industry. As Goyal put it, "The Modi government had approved Guwahati airport as an export point for the two agarwood products." Producers now expect higher profit margins as logistics become smoother and more direct.
