Guwahati: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari promised a permanent fix for the chronic waterlogging at Jorabat. He confirmed the National Highways Authority of India is working with the Assam government to draft a new drainage plan for National Highway 27. Flooding here is a constant headache.

Gadkari detailed the plan in a September 30, 2026 letter. He sent the response to Lok Sabha MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi. She first flagged the issue in a July 24 letter, demanding a long-term solution for the highway stretch. The minister noted the goal is to boost drainage capacity and clear the route.

"The comprehensive drainage improvement proposal is being prepared by NHAI in close coordination with the Government of Assam to enhance drainage capacity and achieve a permanent resolution to the waterlogging issue in Guwahati," Gadkari wrote. He vowed to move fast once the plans are set. Medhi thanked the minister for the update. Officials have not set a start date for construction.
