Guwahati: Police detained several Raijor Dal members outside Janata Bhawan in Dispur on October 20. The group gathered for a human chain protest to demand justice for Zubeen Garg, the Assamese music icon who died in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Officers moved in amid a heavy security presence to break up the demonstration.
Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi organized the event. He hoped the protest would continue without interference from the state government. Before the arrests, Gogoi said, "I hoped that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would allow the protest to proceed without obstruction and accept a memorandum from the participants."
The administration did not release the total count of those taken into custody. Reasons for the detentions remain unclear as public pressure mounts for accountability regarding Garg’s death. The protest was a direct attempt to force a formal response from the Chief Minister.
