Guwahati: Sribhumi Police apprehended and pushed back 28 illegal migrants on Saturday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the operation, stating the move protects state borders and identity. The effort falls under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act of 1950. The state cabinet cleared a standard operating procedure for these expulsions in September 2025, giving district commissioners power to issue removal orders.
Sribhumi, formerly called Karimganj, sits on the border with the Sylhet division of Bangladesh. It is one of four districts sharing that boundary, alongside Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, and Cachar. The government started these pushback drives in May 2025. Many operations happen at night.
Sarma remains firm. He took to social media to voice his stance. "Assam’s patience with illegal infiltration is over," the Chief Minister said. This recent action follows a trend of border enforcement. Last week, police in Dhubri detained 36 suspected Bangladeshi nationals at a ferry ghat after stopping a boatload of 120 people from South Salmara-Mankachar. Additionally, authorities recently picked up over 20 suspected foreign nationals from Guwahati railway stations and hotels.
