Guwahati: Assam officials identified 1,72,673 illegal foreigners by May 31, 2026. Data from the Home and Political Department shows this group includes 61,189 Hindus, 1,11,414 Muslims, and 70 people from other communities. Records stem from the National Register of Citizens and the Registrar General of India.
Total identified individuals reached 1,98,888 by the end of May. The state shared 1,72,673 names with the Election Department to purge electoral rolls. The government notes that security systems protect this data.
The state has sent 9,678 declared foreigners back to Bangladesh in total. Recent efforts picked up speed. Authorities reported that the process of "sending back" illegal foreigners to Bangladesh is being carried out in accordance with the Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines issued on May 2, 2025. Statistics confirm 1,572 people were returned since 2025, with 223 sent back by June 30, 2026. Officials also expelled 117 others under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act of 1950.
Border security remains a priority. Assam shares 263.059 km of international border with Bangladesh. Fencing covers 228.531 km of that stretch. Geography makes finishing the remaining barrier hard. The Border Security Force relies on thermal imagers, drones, and water patrols to monitor the gaps. Meanwhile, a high-level committee finished its report on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. The Union Government is still reviewing those recommendations.
