Guwahati: Assam police caught 24 foreign nationals hiding in various homestays across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrests on October 19. The operation followed specific intelligence tips.

Sarma posted a message regarding the crackdown on social media. "Most of Assam: pandal-hopping. Assam Police: illegal hunting! Based on tip-offs, 24 illegal immigrants were caught hiding in different homestays," he wrote. Officials did not specify the home countries of the detainees or the exact locations where they were found.

The Chief Minister warned that authorities will pursue stringent legal action against illegals. He noted the state remains on high alert. Assam shares 267.5 kilometers of international border with Bangladesh. This boundary spans the Sribhumi, Cachar, Dhubri, and South Salmara-Mankachar districts.

Regional trade moves through an Integrated Check Post at Sutarkandi in the Sribhumi district. The Northeast region currently hosts three such posts along the Bangladesh border, including sites in Dawki, Meghalaya, and Akhaura, Tripura. Assam also operates a separate post at Darranga on the Bhutan border.
