Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wants a nationwide Uniform Civil Code. He claims the lack of common law hits Muslim women the hardest. Sarma spoke to reporters in the Basti district of Uttar Pradesh while visiting the family of Bharatiya Janata Party national general secretary Harish Dwivedi. He was there to offer condolences after the death of Dwivedi's mother.

Sarma pushed for a unified legal framework to tackle polygamy. He stated, "The UCC has already been notified in Assam and should be implemented nationwide." The chief minister insisted that current laws fail women. He believes a single code fixes this.

Opposition parties recently targeted the BJP during protests over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. They also called for a change in government. Sarma dismissed their tactics. "Power comes through votes, not through strong-arm tactics," he said. He maintains that elections remain the only legitimate way to take office.
