Guwahati: Dhubri district officials served notices to nearly 1,000 families this week. The order targets the alleged encroachment of 1,500 bighas of khas government land in the Alamganj area. Families living in Alamganj Part-7 and Part-9 villages now face the threat of eviction under Rule 18(2) of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886.
Residents must produce valid land ownership documents within 15 days. Officials confirmed they will review all submitted evidence before taking further steps. The administration states: "The district administration has maintained that all cases will be considered on their individual merits and disposed of in accordance with the provisions of the law."
Many occupants claim they are victims of circumstance. They fled to these villages after Brahmaputra riverbank erosion destroyed their homes and farms in South Salmara-Mankachar district. These displaced families now worry they cannot verify their land claims. Records from local Gram Panchayat offices are missing or unavailable. Anxiety runs high in the Gauripur Assembly constituency. The countdown to the 15-day deadline has begun.
