Guwahati: A petroleum tanker hauling fuel from Numaligarh to Hojai slammed into a road divider on National Highway 127 in Nagaon district. The vehicle, registered as NL-01L-6875, jackknifed after the driver allegedly lost control when a night bus blocked his path. It leveled a streetlight pole, flipped over, and skidded into a line of shops at Kenapatti. Fuel spilled across the asphalt toward the damaged businesses, forcing fire and emergency crews to rush to the scene to stop a potential explosion. Local residents expressed fear as the wreck left the stretch of road vulnerable to fire.
This accident reignited local complaints regarding high crash rates in the Puranigudam area. Officials have yet to release a report on total damages or potential injuries stemming from the wreck. The state of road safety in this busy commercial corridor remains under intense scrutiny.
Separately, Rupohihat police intercepted a Mahindra pickup van carrying 12 head of cattle during a crackdown on smuggling. Officers chased the vehicle, registered as AS-01-VC-6078, through the district until the suspects jumped out and vanished into the night. Police found the animals restrained in a secret wooden compartment inside the truck bed. Officials confirmed, "The animals were allegedly being transported in the vehicle for movement to another state." Authorities moved the cattle to a nearby cowshed while the investigation into the smuggling network continues.
