Kohima: The Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) opened a new SEWA Shakti Kendra (SSK) in Tuensang this past Friday. Located at House No. 23, Bazaar-C, the center operates under the theme: A Space for Women, A Centre for Empowerment and Collective Action. This hub gives informal workers a place to find services, talk about livelihoods, and build leadership skills.
Temjenlemla, the SEWA Nagaland State Project Coordinator, spoke at the event. She noted that the facility is vital for improving socio-economic conditions for local women. She stated, "the SSK was not merely an office but a space where women could come together, voice their concerns, access information and services and collectively work towards addressing challenges affecting their lives and livelihoods."
The event featured Tiamenla as chair, with District Convenor Anung providing the welcome address. K Achung from the Tuensang Town Baptist Lashong led the dedication prayer, while District Secretary Starr and District Treasurer Shithsangla handled the vote of thanks and benediction. The program focuses on street vendors, farmers, and home-based workers.
SEWA Nagaland began in 2013 by mobilizing workers in Dimapur. The organization now claims over 3,000 members across seven districts: Kohima, Dimapur, Chumoukedima, Tuensang, Shamator, Phek, and Meluri. The new Tuensang location marks the fifth operational center, joining existing sites in Dimapur, Kohima, Pfutsero, and Shamator.
