Guwahati: The All Assam Gorkha Students Union is set to launch fresh protests in Talap after the local administration ignored a 24-hour deadline for action. The group demands justice for a 22-year-old woman allegedly raped and assaulted at the Khobong Tea Estate last Friday. Police found the survivor without clothes at the scene.
Officers arrested 55-year-old Papu Ahmed in connection with the crime. AAGSU delegates visited the Talap Police Outpost Sunday night to pressure investigators. They also submitted a formal memorandum to the Assam Chief Minister requesting swift legal action. The union wants an encounter against the accused and the eviction of his Talap residence.
Protesters blocked the highway Saturday to force the issue. AAGSU representatives met with the Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner Monday afternoon to resolve the situation. The organisation warned that they will escalate their campaign if the meeting fails. AAGSU stated: "The organisation said no satisfactory response was received within the given time."
The union expects more than just arrests. They want the government to deploy more police, improve surveillance, and speed up emergency response times in isolated areas of the district. Authorities maintain that the accused is innocent until proven guilty in court.
