Assam court grants bail to four activists in Kaziranga hotel protest

Guwahati: A local court granted bail to four land rights activists jailed for protesting a luxury hotel project near Kaziranga National Park. The Bhumi Adhikar Joutha Sangram Samity announced the release of Pranab Doley, Bijit Kutum, Bhaskar Saikia, and Rajeev Pegu on Thursday. Police arrested the men earlier this month.

The activists challenged the transfer of land for the hotel, citing irregularities and threats to local community rights. The committee credited senior advocate Shantanu Borthakur and attorneys Mrityunjay Pegu and Deepesh Agrawal for the legal victory. They remain committed to the cause. The group said the court decision had reinforced its resolve to continue its campaign for land rights in Assam.

Legal fights continue for others in the movement. Legal proceedings against Adit Chandra Rabha, advisor to the Borduar Bagan Bhumi Pattan Dabi Samity, remain active. The committee thanked the public across Assam for standing with the protesters while the activists were in custody.
