Guwahati: Hundreds marched through Sonapur on Monday. They protested a plan to install high-voltage electricity towers across 12 villages in the Nartap area. The Amri Karbi Students Association organized the event, pulling in support from five other tribal groups. They walked from Digaru Baligate to the Dimoria Sub-Divisional Commissioner office.
Protesters want the government to kill the project. They worry the infrastructure will wreck homes and farmland in this tribal region. Indigenous families fear losing their livelihoods to yet another development scheme. They claim their land is grabbed far too often.
The groups dropped a memorandum with the sub-divisional administration. They demanded the state scrap these anti-tribal decisions immediately. Representatives stated, "The government must ensure that development projects do not come at the cost of tribal residential and agricultural land."
Agitators promised more trouble if the state ignores them. They plan to ramp up protests if officials do not protect their fields and homes soon.
