Agartala: The Tea Board of India is moving to open a dedicated tea auction centre in Agartala. This project aims to fix old logistical headaches for local growers. Currently, producers must ship tea out of state to reach auction platforms. This process drives up costs and creates needless delays. The new facility promises to slash these expenses and invite more buyers to the table.
Officials met at the Tea Board headquarters in Kolkata to finalize the plan. Attendees included Tripura Tea Development Corporation Chairman Samir Ghosh, Managing Director Rajesh Kumar Das, and Tea Board Deputy Chairman C. Murugan. They reviewed the roadmap for the site to ensure it hits the ground running. The project has been a long-standing demand for estate owners and local growers across the state.
Samir Ghosh pushed for the development to modernize local trade. He noted the auction centre would mark a turning point by introducing a more transparent trading mechanism, ensuring better price realisation and increasing the visibility of Tripura tea in national markets. This change should lead to more competitive bidding and stronger earnings for small growers and big estates alike.
Tripura now ranks fifth in national tea output. It pumps out 9 million kilograms of tea every year. The industry started back in 1916 under Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya. While famous for its CTC black tea, the region now produces green, white, and orthodox varieties. The government expects the new centre to stabilize the regional economy and help thousands of workers dependent on the trade.
