Agartala: Tripura launched its first livestock insurance scheme to shield farmers from financial ruin. Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das confirmed the state will shoulder 85 percent of premium costs. Farmers pay the remaining 15 percent.
This initiative combines efforts from the Indian government’s National Livestock Mission and the Tripura Department of Animal Resources Development. It covers cattle, goats, pigs, buffaloes, and sheep. Farmers can secure coverage up to 50,000 rupees. The plan targets losses from diseases, accidents, and other unforeseen events.
The price tiers vary. A 25 rupee premium covers 5,000 rupees for one year. A 51 rupee payment covers 10,000 rupees. A 76 rupee payment nets 15,000 rupees. The maximum 50,000 rupee coverage costs a 254 rupee premium. Farmers can choose one, two, or three-year terms.
"Livestock rearing plays an important role in strengthening the rural economy, generating employment and increasing farmers’ income," Das said. He noted the scheme provides security for animal husbandry.
Poultry stays excluded due to short production cycles. However, separate compensation up to 20,000 rupees exists for poultry fires or disease outbreaks like bird flu. Mandatory ear tagging is required for all insured animals. Applicants must provide a 12-digit barcode, photos, bank details, and an Aadhaar card. Details remain available at all state animal hospitals and dispensaries.
