Agartala: Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu opened a workshop on modern pig farming at Pragna Bhavan today. He toured various exhibition stalls to talk with scientists, farmers, and event organizers. The state churns out 59.20 thousand metric tons of meat every year. Local residents consume about 14.15 kg of meat per head annually, with pork making up a significant slice of that total.
Nallu views pig farmers as rural entrepreneurs rather than just producers. He stated, "The progressive pig farmers are not only producers, they are rural entrepreneurs contributing to the state’s economy." The state government aims to boost income for rearers, build new jobs, and turn pig farming into a profitable venture. Officials plan to provide scientific knowledge, financial aid, and better technology to stakeholders.
Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das also spoke at the event. He urged residents to use scientific methods to turn pig farming into a stable career. The workshop, titled Empowering Progressive Pig Farmers through Innovative and Scientific Technologies on Pig Farming, was a joint effort between the Animal Resources Development department, the All India Coordinated Research Project, and the National Livestock Mission.
The event featured a documentary screening and a specialized exhibition. Ten farmers received awards for their success. Department secretary S. Prabhu delivered the welcome address, while Director Dr. N. K. Chanchal closed the day with a vote of thanks. Experts covered essential topics including disease prevention, farm management, scientific reproduction, and marketing strategies.
