Guwahati: African Swine Fever has crippled a commercial pig farm in Kaliabor, Assam. The disease killed the entire livestock belonging to Lohit Saikia of Dalgan Borpeta Doloni. The farm is gone. Saikia lost 80 pigs valued at nearly Rs 20 lakh over the past 15 days.
Saikia started this business with an Rs 8 lakh bank loan. He hoped to build a self-reliant livelihood. Now, he faces severe financial hardship and immediate pressure to repay his debt. Officials stepped in to manage the spread.
Veterinary authorities oversaw the culling and burial of the remaining livestock suspected of infection. They followed standard disease containment protocols to prevent further transmission. As the outbreak continues to plague the state, officials say, "ASF has emerged as a major challenge for pig farmers across the state, causing repeated livestock losses and affecting livelihoods dependent on pig rearing." The state’s livestock sector remains under intense pressure as containment measures proceed.
