Nagaland students tour Assam organic farms

Shillong: Twenty-four students from Khonoma village traveled to Assam for a two-day organic farming workshop. The trip ran from October 23 to 24. It targeted the Pabhoi Greens site in the Sonitpur district. Aaranyak coordinated the visit to teach the group about sustainable agriculture.

Neelam Dutta, the founder and managing director of Pabhoi Greens, led the instruction. He explained bio-pest repellent manufacturing and vermicomposting to the students. He also detailed how to build organic seed nurseries and manage food webs. The students learned how chemicals damage crops and the environment. They focused on inter-cropping methods and agro-forestry concepts.

The group examined a vast collection of local crops. They viewed a germ plasm bank holding 200 indigenous paddy varieties from Assam. Dr. Bibhuti Prasad Lahkar, a senior conservation scientist at Aaranyak, organized the excursion. He noted the goal was to show the students how organic methods support both human health and nature. He stated, "The education tour was expected to impress the young minds from the historic Nagaland village known for its green lifestyle, about the far-reaching benefits of organic farming in well-being of the natural environment and human beings."

The students also toured two major landmarks. They visited Kaziranga National Park to see the local wildlife. The group finished their trip at the historic Nag Sankar Temple. They observed the resident turtles in the temple pond.
