Shillong: Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal wants women to form the front line against Punjab's drug crisis. On Wednesday, the Shiromani Akali Dal leader urged her party's women's wing, Maavan Dheeyan Di Fauj, to organize traditional thikri pehra or community night patrols in every village and neighborhood. She spoke at a rally in Kharar, stressing that local vigilance is the only way to expose drug sellers and their protectors.
Badal made her position clear regarding the impact of the trade. "For the women of Punjab, ending the scourge of drugs is their number one priority," she told the crowd. She promised that a SAD government in 2027 would install a special task force led by a female Director General of Police. Her plan includes stricter laws, such as a 10-year ban on bail for traffickers and the seizure of property to pay victims.
The MP slammed the Aam Aadmi Party government for failing to stop drug trafficking or protect those who speak out. She pointed to several alarming incidents, including the police treatment of Daljit Singh’s family and the detention of a CISF constable who exposed drug use at Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. She also highlighted the cases of Mohanjit Singh, who allegedly suffered torture after protesting, and Gulzar Singh of Dirba, who died by suicide following harassment over questioning the sale of chitta.
Badal further accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of ignoring the family of anti-drug campaigner Parvinder Singh Jhota. She maintains that the current administration lacks the urgency needed to secure the state against the drug mafia.
