Operation Trident Strikes Drug Cartels Across Three States

Kohima: Authorities arrested 18 people during coordinated raids across Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur on October 23. The mission, dubbed Operation Trident, targeted a transnational drug syndicate. It hit 38 locations simultaneously. Agencies froze 1,424 bank accounts and seized properties valued at Rs 17.82 crore.

The Narcotics Control Bureau led the effort alongside the Mizoram Police and the Enforcement Directorate. Teams also recovered 500 detonators and Rs 12 lakh in cash. Investigators linked the operation to hawala transactions totaling nearly Rs 100 crore. These funds moved narcotics from Myanmar into India and Bangladesh through the Death Triangle Corridor.

Key arrests included the alleged ringleader Thangcintuang, who faced over 10 NDPS cases and was apprehended in Delhi. Officials also detained facilitator Vungkhanthawna under the PITNDPS Act. Previous investigations led to the August 2024 arrest of Lalrampari for hawala activities and the November 2025 arrest of Abu Saleh in Cachar for logistics. Digital forensics and financial profiling allowed teams to map the syndicate structure.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the teams on X. He said, "India will hammer until the last nail is driven into the coffin of drug cartels." This crackdown aligns with the government goal to wipe out drug networks by December 31, 2029.
