Shillong: BJP leader and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak is demanding a full accounting of state funds spent on Chief Minister helicopter tours. He claims the timing of these flights suggests the government is funding indirect election campaigning with taxpayer money.
The state faces a major financial crunch. Thousands of families are currently struggling. Marak points to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, where employees are waiting on a 30-month salary backlog. Teachers, casual workers, and pensioners are also owed money.
Marak laid out his grievances in a recent statement. He said, "At a time when teachers, casual workers and employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) are awaiting their rightful dues, spending public money on helicopter tours that may serve as indirect election campaigning is deeply concerning."
He wants immediate disclosure. The government must explain the purpose and cost of every flight. Marak argues the administration should prioritize clearing debts over political spectacle. The public deserves transparency before the upcoming council elections.
