Tura MDC Demands Answers Over Scholarship Payment Failures

Shillong: Tura MDC Bernard Marak is demanding answers from the state government regarding missing and reduced scholarship payouts. He claims the Umbrella Scholarship scheme is failing the students it is meant to support. Some applicants received far less money than they requested. Others were denied aid entirely.

The trouble continues despite a recent announcement from the Chief Minister promising that funds were on the way. Families are hurting. Students from low-income households now face mounting pressure to cover tuition, admission fees, and other school costs. Many are forced to hunt for cash elsewhere just to stay in class.

Marak issued a formal statement on October 15 to push the issue. "The complaints have emerged despite the Chief Minister’s announcement regarding the release of scholarships," Marak said. He insists the state must explain why they rejected certain applications and why disbursement amounts remain inconsistent.

The MDC wants total transparency now. He demands a public list showing the status of every approved, rejected, and pending application. The government must verify every report of short payment and clear all outstanding dues immediately. Students depend on this lifeline to study. Marak argues that official promises mean nothing unless they turn into actual, timely cash for those in need.
