Shillong: Two climbers from Meghalaya are heading to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling for high-altitude training. The Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association picked Keliostar Pdai and B Kyrmenskhem Lyngdoh for the program. Pdai serves as a battalion constable with the 3rd Meghalaya Police Battalion. Lyngdoh is an NCC cadet currently attending Sankardev College.

The course runs from October 21 to November 17, 2026. The association is picking up the tab for both men. It requires climbers to have finished a basic course with an A grade. They need to sharpen their skills for the big climbs ahead.

Students will work on route planning, setting up camps, and technical climbing techniques. The curriculum covers gear prep, summit pushes, and handling tricky weather. Instructors push participants on physical fitness, leadership, and team coordination. They must also master safe descents.

The association expects this training to boost the state's technical climbing pool. They want more locals chasing adventure sports. According to an official report, the goal is to provide specialized training at a national institution to "strengthen technical expertise in Meghalaya and encourage greater participation in mountaineering and adventure sports."
