Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) wants change. They are demanding a reserved quota for Meghalaya students pursuing B.Sc. Nursing at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS). The push follows a bleak discovery. Not one of the 48 candidates on the 2026-27 provisional admission list released on September 7 appears to be from the state.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem submitted a formal request to the NEIGRIHMS director. He argues that local students need meaningful access to professional training at an institute sitting in their own backyard. Synrem noted, "The Council has submitted a representation to the Director of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) seeking a fair opportunity for local students to access the central institution."
The group wants a system shift. They are pushing for a seat-allocation model that mirrors the one used at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal. They also pointed to the existing reservation framework currently used for MBBS admissions at the institute as a blueprint for reform. The HYC wants the Governing Council to debate these rule changes during their meeting on October 27. They believe this shift will boost the local healthcare workforce.
