Shillong: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council pushed the NEIGRIHMS administration Friday to fill empty Nursing Officer posts. The group wants an 80:20 female-to-male hiring ratio. They delivered a formal request to the Director on Friday.
Roy Kupar Synrem, the HYC president, argued the split is needed for clinical work in a tertiary-care hospital. He believes this is a must for patient privacy and gender-sensitive care. The HYC wants a time-bound action plan now. It is a big staffing gap.
Synrem noted this demand does not aim to shut out male nurses. Instead, he said the goal is to secure enough female staff for obstetrics, gynaecology, maternity, paediatrics, and neonatal care. "The Council argued that a gender-sensitive workforce is vital for maintaining the dignity of female patients in specialised wards."
The HYC pointed to a March 2026 Bombay High Court judgment to back their case. They also highlighted hiring practices at central hubs like AIIMS and JIPMER. These facilities currently use the 80:20 split. The council expects a written response regarding the urgent staffing shortage to support patients from Meghalaya and the broader Northeast.
