Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union is threatening to reignite protests at NEIGRIHMS. They blame the state government for failing to set up a promised meeting with the Union Health Minister. KSU assistant general secretary Pynshaborlang Rani sent letters to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Director Prof Nalin Mehta demanding immediate action. The group previously held an indefinite sit-in starting May 1 but suspended it on May 5 after officials promised a resolution.
Talks with the Chief Secretary on August 26 and September 8 failed to produce results. The union now demands a strict timeline for their charter of demands. They want the institute to fix the 20:80 male-to-female nursing ratio and restore the 35-year age cap. They also insist on offline OMR exams, a review of the reservation roster, and an audit of backlog vacancies.
Rani expressed frustration over the lack of movement. “Despite assurances given by the state government, there has been no tangible progress toward resolving the issues raised by the union,” he said. The KSU told Prof Mehta to stop the Governing Council from approving any disputed posts. They even suggested he step down if he cannot solve the deadlock.
The union remains open to talks but warned the government to move quickly. They are ready to resume democratic protests if their list of grievances continues to go ignored by those in charge.
