Shillong: Shillong is shaking off the unrest. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed Sunday that the city is returning to normal after two nights without a single reported incident. Security forces are now swarming the city. Police and central paramilitary units held area domination exercises throughout Saturday and Sunday to keep a lid on trouble.
The Rapid Action Force completed two road marches to reassure the public. Additional forces are holding down sensitive spots across town. "The overall endeavour of the police and security forces was to maintain peace and law and order and ensure that people felt confident about moving freely anywhere in the city," Syiem said.
Tensions remain high. The Khasi Students Union has a five-point charter of demands and a packed schedule to back it up. Members will stage a sit-in at the U Kiang Nangbah statue near Civil Hospital starting at 11 am on Monday. Similar events are set for seven districts across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills on Tuesday.
The union avoided protests Saturday so candidates could sit for the Meghalaya Public Service Commission Lower Division Assistant exam. They previously scrubbed a protest at Khyndai Lad after the administration pulled the permit. Meanwhile, the KSU is pushing legislators to bring up their demands during the State Assembly Autumn Session starting August 24. Police have locked down areas near the Civil Hospital to keep the peace during the session.
