Shillong: The Khasi Students Union issued an ultimatum to NEIGRIHMS Director Nalin Mehta this Monday. They want him to stick to the recruitment promises made during a May 5, 2025 meeting. If the institute pushes forward with hiring without settling these disputes, the union plans to launch a fierce resistance.
KSU General Secretary Reuben A. Najiar said those earlier commitments remain ignored. The union previously suspended an indefinite sit-in protest based on those promises. Now, they fear the Governing Council will simply brush aside their demands at an upcoming meeting. The union demands the implementation of an 80:20 female-to-male nursing ratio and a revision of reservation quotas for indigenous communities. They also insist that NEIGRIHMS must stop using external agencies and start conducting recruitment exams in-house.
The memorandum points to a July 4 incident where a male nurse allegedly assaulted a minor girl. The union claims some staff members held a protest supporting the accused. They demand the immediate termination of the accused nurse and the suspension of staff who rallied for him. "The union has learnt that the Governing Council will meet soon and all the demands placed by the union will be cast aside," Najiar stated. The KSU wants the state government to step in, halt any meetings, and force a resolution to these ongoing issues.
