Shillong: Bollywood actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut wore a handcrafted Meghalayan Eri silk saree during a recent public appearance. She shared the look on Instagram, tagging the brand Taara Vedaa. She captioned the photo, "My first Meghalayan saree."
The purple garment uses iron dust and pomegranate for dye. Weavers spent two-and-a-half months crafting the piece. They label the work slow luxury. Eri silk is known as Ahimsa silk because harvesters leave the moth alive.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma thanked the Mandi MP on X this Thursday. He praised the promotion of the state textile. "Woven with care, rooted in heritage and known as Ahimsa Silk, Eri carries the warmth and story of our people, from Meghalaya to the world," Sangma stated.
Locals call the fabric Ryndia. It holds a GI tag and originates primarily from the Ri-Bhoi district. Weavers and state officials have long pushed for high-profile political support to expand the market for the fabric. Ranaut’s choice provides a significant lift to those efforts.
