Shillong: The federal government is pushing Meghalaya’s handloom and handicraft products onto the global stage. Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita confirmed the plan in Shillong. He wants better market access for local weavers. He also wants to keep the unique cultural identity of their work safe.
The ministry aims to link local producers with international buyers. This includes the state’s famous Geographical Indication tagged Eri silk. Officials are currently running skill development and upskilling programs. They are also selling yarn to artisans at subsidized rates. These moves help workers produce more high-quality goods.
Government planners are eyeing e-commerce platforms to link rural crafters with overseas customers. Export promotion initiatives will also move forward. Margherita said, "The effort was aimed at increasing the reach of the state’s traditional products without compromising their distinctive cultural heritage."
Local communities play a massive role in keeping the state’s silk traditions alive. Margherita expects international tourism to climb alongside trade. He believes the state holds massive potential for foreign visitors in the coming years. Officials intend to drive visibility for both crafts and travel beyond the domestic market.
