Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma opened a new Centre of Excellence for Eri weaving yesterday. The facility sits inside the Integrated Textile Tourism Complex at Ri Sai in Nongpoh. This launch capped off National Handloom Week and coincided with National Handloom Day celebrations. The project seeks to protect ancestral weaving techniques for the next generation.

The complex functions as a hub for state heritage. It houses an Ahimsa Silk training and design center, a restaurant, several cottages, and a retail plaza. Sangma spent the day talking with the people who keep the industry alive. He met with various spinners, rearers, and weavers. He pushed for more sustainable paths for these local creators. The Chief Minister said, "Umden-Diwon and Ri Bhoi are emerging as important hubs for Meghalaya's indigenous textile traditions, combining craft, culture, cuisine, trade and tourism."

State officials remain focused on the sector. They want to ensure traditional textiles survive the test of time. Government investment aims to bridge the gap between ancient skills and modern trade opportunities.
