Meghalaya School Association Demands Meeting with CM Over Unresolved Issues

Shillong: The Meghalaya Schools Welfare Development Association-Central Body warned the state government Tuesday that it might shift tactics if six lingering school issues stay ignored. President Hamarbamut Marbaniang fired off a memorandum demanding an immediate audience with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. The group feels sidelined. Despite repeated attempts to negotiate since April, the government remains silent.

The association spent months gathering feedback from stakeholders across Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, and Garo Hills. They reviewed their progress during an executive meeting on August 8. Their main grievance involves a lack of financial aid and grants for secondary and higher secondary schools. Institutions are struggling to stay open without state cash. Marbaniang noted that a formal request for a meeting sent on July 8 went unanswered.

The group wants a high-level sit-down before Teachers’ Day on September 5. Marbaniang urged the Chief Minister to bring Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, and Education Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar Mantri to the table. The association expects action. "The matters were discussed extensively during the association’s executive meeting held on August 8," the group stated. Continued delays could force the association to act. They sent copies of their memorandum to all relevant ministers to ensure the message sticks.
