Shillong: Garo Students Union members gathered in Tura on Friday to back education reformer Sonam Wangchuk and his ongoing student movement in New Delhi. The demonstration took place outside the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner office. They want change.
Students and citizens pointed out that Meghalaya's education system ignores remote areas. Poor roads and decaying school buildings plague rural districts. Qualified teachers remain scarce while competitive coaching stays locked in Shillong. The union believes current training programs fail to fix these problems.
Teachers carry too heavy a load. They handle census counts, surveys, and election duties instead of teaching. The union says this hurts students. A memorandum sent to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma demands a fix. They want better digital tools and district-level coaching. They also want teachers in classrooms, not doing administration work. The union stated, "The programme reaffirmed the commitment of the student community to democratic values, peaceful expression and constructive engagement in addressing issues affecting education."
The group submitted their list of demands through the local Deputy Commissioner. They expect the government to decentralize opportunities and fix the infrastructure mess.
