Nagaland Street Vendors Association Orders Mandatory Sunday Shutdowns

Kohima: The Street Vendors Association Nagaland (SVAN) is tightening its grip on street commerce. It issued strict directives on October 31 covering vending hours, public space, and food safety standards. Vendors must comply with all municipal laws and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations or face disciplinary action.

Business stays shut on Sundays until 12:00 noon. This rule preserves the sanctity of morning church hours. Vendors must keep footpaths clear at all times. This move honors the Supreme Court order establishing the right to walk on a demarcated footpath, which counts as a Fundamental Right under Article 19(1)(d) of the Constitution.

Food handling rules are equally rigid. Vendors cannot use inked, printed, or written paper to pack or serve food to avoid chemical hazards. Staff must wear aprons, gloves, and hairnets to guarantee clean service. The association expects full cooperation from its membership. "The regulations will be strictly monitored at all times," the SVAN stated.
