Kohima: The Nagaland Gaonbura Federation (NGBF) wants the state government to scrap all restrictions on the appointment and work of Gaonburas. These village elders face interference in both rural and urban areas. The NGBF executive committee finalized this demand during an October 30 meeting at Hotel Jaal Mahal in Dimapur.
The group voiced strong opposition to recent government directives. They claim these rules erode a vital traditional institution despite multiple appeals. The NGBF also warned that the state’s Code of Ethics for Gaonburas likely violates the fundamental rights and constitutional freedoms of Naga citizens. The Federation stated, “The institution of Gaonburas is integral to Naga customary practices, traditions and the traditional system of village administration.”
Beyond internal grievances, the NGBF slammed the ongoing growth of Naga political groups. Public frustration is boiling over. Residents struggle daily with multiple taxations enforced by various factions. The Federation labeled the creation of new groups alongside the existing thirty-odd organizations as a source of grave disappointment. They urged all parties to stop forming factions and focus on a peaceful political solution for the region.
The meeting also set the future agenda for the organization. The Federation will hold its 2027 General Session in Dimapur. The Dimapur District GB Association will manage the event planning.
