Kohima: The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Dimapur convicted a food business operator on August 4, 2026. The operator received a sentence of simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. This conviction came under Section 59(i) of the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. The Food Safety Officer and the Designated Officer of the Dimapur Zone filed the criminal complaint, while the Additional Public Prosecutor and Assistant Public Prosecutor represented the state.
A similar ruling occurred in the Mokokchung Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on March 16. That operator also faced simple imprisonment and a Rs 1 lakh fine for violating the same act. The local Food Safety Officer and the Designated Officer, who now serves as Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety, brought that case forward.
Authorities did not release names. Multiple cases remain active in various districts. The Directorate of Health and Family Welfare maintains that these rulings push forward better regulation. "These judgments mark another landmark step forward in strengthening the enforcement mechanism of food safety regulations across Nagaland," the department noted.
Officials warn all food handlers to follow safety rules. This includes restaurants, cloud kitchens, and retail shops. The state demands that everyone must provide unadulterated food to the public. Customers should report suspected safety violations to local Chief Medical Officer offices. People can also use the Food Safety Connect mobile app to log complaints or check business licenses.
