Gangtok: Sikkim will see its water security and disaster preparedness policies overhauled by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources. The committee added the revival of natural springs and the mitigation of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods to its official agenda for 2026-27. Indra Hang Subba, the state's sole Lok Sabha member, secured these inclusions after meeting with committee chairman Rajiv Pratap Rudy in New Delhi.

Natural springs serve as the primary drinking water source for Sikkim. These sites often hold deep religious value for local mountain communities. Current data shows these water systems face drying trends, which threatens both public supply and local livelihoods. The committee now intends to explore sustainable management strategies and the protection of crucial aquifers.

Glacial risks also loom large. The National Disaster Management Authority identified 189 high-vulnerability glacial lakes across the Indian Himalayas. Sikkim contains 40 of these high-hazard sites, with 16 classified as the highest risk. Experts cite a desperate need for early warning systems and better infrastructure defense.

Subba believes this national attention is timely. He stated, "The inclusion of both subjects provides an opportunity to address the interconnected challenges of spring water security, climate change, glacial lake expansion and disaster risk in the Himalayan region." The review will focus on scientific assessments, recharge zone protection, and better monitoring to safeguard downstream populations.
