Gangtok: Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Dr. Indra Hang Subba met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to demand better roads. He wants climate-resilient highways for North Sikkim. The region faces constant threats from landslides and flash floods. Existing border roads struggle in the fragile Himalayan terrain. Subba told Singh that current conditions demand a shift toward scientific planning.
The MP insists that engineers conduct thorough geological and geotechnical studies before breaking ground on new projects. These assessments must examine slope stability, drainage patterns, and soil characteristics. Proper planning prevents future disasters. Subba believes these steps are the only way to ensure long-term safety and durability for critical infrastructure.
Recent weather events exposed the weakness of current routes. Subba asked the Ministry to prioritize terrain-specific designs to keep supply lines open year-round. He thanked Singh for supporting the state, noting that these border roads hold immense strategic importance. "In the Himalayas, infrastructure must be built with the mountains, not against them," Subba said. He remains hopeful that the government will adopt these rigorous standards for all future highway development.
