Gangtok: Fifty families in Sikkim's Namchi district are moving into new homes this week. The state government scheduled the handover to coincide with the ongoing Dasain festivities. The Block Administrative Centre in Yangang is managing the inauguration and key distribution for the Sikkim Garib Awas Yojana, or SGAY, housing project. These families finally have permanent shelter.

Raj Kumari Thapa, the local MLA and Deputy Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, oversaw the effort. She highlighted that these homes bring stability to households that previously lacked secure housing. Thapa credited Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for prioritizing welfare initiatives that boost living standards for local communities. She noted, "The scheme reflected the government's focus on welfare measures aimed at improving the lives of local communities."

The state also cleared a backlog for another welfare program. Fourteen residents received their pending first payment of Rs 20,000 under the Sikkim Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana. This program, known as the Aama Yojana, grants women Rs 40,000 annually. Officials finished the distribution on Sunday to ensure eligible women receive their promised financial support.
