Guwahati: Bachua Chauhan and his wife Rajani Chauhan are scraping by in a wreck of a house. They live in Jawani village, located in the Kaliabor region of Assam. The structure is falling apart. The couple stays there with their children, facing constant hardship as the building rots around them.
Life is brutal during the monsoon season. The family has zero protection from the elements. They claim the government has ignored their repeated pleas for support. They have been left out of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, better known as PMAY. This program is supposed to provide permanent housing for families in need. They have nothing.
The Chauhans also lack a ration card. This missing paperwork cuts them off from essential food security benefits. They cannot get the help they need to feed their children. The couple has appealed to local authorities to investigate their living situation. They want a roof that holds and access to the welfare schemes they were promised. As the family says, they are "deprived of a home under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and other basic government welfare benefits."
