Diju River floods submerge homes and farms in Assam

Guwahati: The Diju River surged past its banks, flooding swaths of Kaliabor in Assam. The rising water swallowed homes and farmland alike. Residents in Shiyalekhaiti and Khalihamari now watch as their houses sit underwater.

Agricultural losses are mounting. Hundreds of bighas of transplanted paddy fields are submerged, threatening the local harvest. Nearby, fishery ponds spanning hundreds of bighas have vanished beneath the rising current.

Road travel is a gamble. Water now flows across the Public Works Department road linking Amoni, Shiyalekhaiti, Shivsthan, and Misa. This effectively severs vital connections for the community. The region faces a grim outlook as river levels keep climbing across multiple districts in the state.

Beyond the Diju River, the Missa Juri is tearing through the Bamuni area. Families in Bhatabari village are watching their ancestral land disappear into the current. Residents have called on local MLA and Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta to drop geo-bags along the banks to stop the earth from washing away.

The Misa river also caused chaos on the route connecting Barali village to Nijari and Bamuni. Water swallowed hundreds of bighas of sali paddy and forced several local industrial units to shut down. Knee-deep water now tears at the road surface, forcing locals to gamble on a dangerous commute. Residents are now demanding the government raise the road level once the water drains to stop the constant cycle of flooding.
