Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gathered the Assam Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board to demand immediate progress on worker initiatives. He wants faster infrastructure development and more aggressive skill training programs. The board must build stronger ties with employers to boost job placement for trained staff.

Sarma ordered officials to build Model Degree Colleges, hostels, and transit shelters. He also flagged the need for mobile creches, toilets, and Labour Chowk-cum-Facilitation Centres. Access is the goal. These facilities provide essential services for the laborers and their families.

Registration is the next hurdle. Sarma directed staff to use Aadhaar and Ration Card data to verify every worker. The state needs this systematic approach to expand the reach of current welfare benefits. "Sarma further directed officials to give priority to the collection of statutory cess, an important source of funding for welfare measures for workers in the construction sector." This money keeps the programs afloat.
