Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is building a road for Rupamoni Gorh. The one-kilometer stretch leads to the home of the first woman from Assam to summit Mount Everest. It will be located in the Lakhimpur district. Gorh reached the world's highest peak on May 21, 2026. She joined the climb as part of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police All-Women’s Everest Expedition.
Sarma said the decision recognizes Gorh’s historic achievement and her drive. The government wants her success to push local youth toward big goals. Officials describe the project as a permanent tribute to her climb. They view her journey as an example of how discipline and perseverance overcome major challenges.
The government says honoring pioneers like Gorh promotes a culture where individual success motivates society. The project serves as a symbol of women’s empowerment.
