Assam to Name New Road After Everest Climber Rupamoni Gorh

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered the construction of a one-kilometre road in Lakhimpur to honor Rupamoni Gorh. The route will lead to her residence. It serves as a tribute to her feat as the first woman from the state to climb Mount Everest.

Gorh reached the summit on May 21, 2026. She climbed as part of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police All-Women’s Everest Expedition. The government chose to recognize her work to push young people toward big goals. Officials said, "The naming of the road is also expected to create a lasting symbol of women’s empowerment and inspire future generations to dream bigger and strive for excellence in diverse fields."

State leaders plan to use this project to highlight local success. They want to turn individual wins into motivation for the state's youth. The move fits into a broader government plan to build an aspirational Assam by celebrating figures who earn national or international fame. Gorh remains a symbol of discipline and resilience for the region.
