Guwahati: Sanam Das is pleading with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to break a deadlocked land dispute in Assam’s Lakhimpur district. She claims a corrupt nexus of politicians and bureaucrats pushed her off 19 bighas of land. The case currently sits at the Lakhimpur District Commissioner’s office. Das has been pushing for action since 2024.
She claims the land was stolen through a fraudulent transfer to dealers Abdul Subhan and Abdul Salam. Das reached out to local representatives for help. She spoke with Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka and Rongangodi MLA Rishiraj Hazarika. Deka shut her down. He defended Circle Officer Niluram Sharma against bribery claims. Deka told her that Niluram Sharma had neither taken nor would take any bribe and described the officer as a “clean and good man.”
Das alleges the rot goes deep into the administration. She accused District Commissioner Pranab Jeet Kakoty of favoring the land dealers. She also claims Circle Officer Niluram Sharma threatened local media and maintains ties with the accused dealers. Das says she faces personal threats because of her push for justice. Other officials, including Madhujya Buragohain, allegedly blocked her progress.
Bureaucratic stonewalling remains the primary hurdle. Das submitted paperwork to Secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department Sweety Changsan and the CM’s Secretariat under Johor Jyoti Pegu. Neither office acted. She also filed a report with CM Vigilance. Nothing changed. She now demands an independent audit of land records and a full investigation into the conduct of the named officials.
