Guwahati: A family in Assam is demanding an independent probe into a massive land grab in the Bogolijan area of Lakhimpur. They claim brokers and government officials conspired to steal 19 bighas, 3 kotha, and 3 lussa of their ancestral property. The dispute centers on land originally bought by Muhiuddin in 1939.
Sanam Das, Muhiuddin's granddaughter, says Abdul Subhan and Abdul Salam seized the plot and sold it in parts through fraud. Despite the family reporting the case to the Assam Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell and the agency ordering the Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner to act, the victims say officials have ignored them. They want answers. The family claims the land records, known as Jamabandi, remain clear despite the illicit sales.
"My grandfather bought the land in Buglijan in 1939, and it was registered in his name. Abdul Subhan and Abdul Salam illegally grabbed our land and fraudulently entered their names and sold it part by part with the help of corrupt officials," Das said. She pointed to a list of implicated bureaucrats, naming former Circle Officer Nilurom Kumar Sarma, Revenue Officer Tinkumoni Borah, Deputy Commissioner Pranab Jit Kakoti, and current Revenue Officer Madhurjya Buragohain.
The tension hit a boiling point over a scheduled hearing. Buragohain summoned the alleged brokers for a session on September 30, 2026, even though their names do not appear on the official records. Das claims the brokers linked their identities to a villager to bypass legal protections. She insists the government must step in to dismantle this nexus.
